The sesame plant (Sesamum indicum) has white and purple bell-shaped flowers in which the sesame seeds grow. Like poppy seeds, sesame is a capsule fruit and originally comes from India. Today, the plant is a widespread crop and is probably one of the first oil plants ever cultivated. Nowadays, sesame plants are grown in tropical areas such as China, Africa and South America. Sesame tastes slightly sweet and somewhat nutty.
