The redcurrant (Ribes) belongs to the gooseberry family (Grossulariaceae). In Austria and South Tyrol the berry is also called Ribisl. A distinction is made between the black currant (Ribes nigrum) and the red currant (Ribes rubrum). The currant bush is hardy and has deciduous leaves. The berries taste sweet and sour. The leaves of the black and red currant are collected and dried shortly after flowering and are ideal for making tea.
