Jiaogulan, a member of the gourd family, has long been used as a medicinal plant in East Asia. It is also called immortality herb there. Although not related to ginseng, the leaves of Jiaogulan contain partly similar active ingredients as the ginseng root, whose positive properties are praised in naturopathy. Jiaogulan has therefore been used in Chinese natural medicine for centuries.
Today, Jiaogulan grows in some parts of Asia and is also known by its botanical name Gynostemma Pentaphyllum.
Since jiaogulan is not approved as a foodstuff in Germany and the EU according to the EU Food Regulation, it is mostly sold as a fragrant bath tea.
