Kelp is a term that primarily refers to species of algae in the order Brown algae. Brown algae are large, perennial algae found in the seas and oceans. They can reach a considerable size, growing up to 60 meters long. Kelp algae are anchored to rocky outcrops or the sea floor and grow in coastal areas with cold, nutrient-rich waters. Kelp is known for its ecological importance as it provides an important habitat for many marine organisms. It serves as a source of food and shelter for various marine life such as fish, crabs, mussels and seabirds. One capsule of kelp a day covers the recommended intake of iodine.
