Ginger (Zingiber officinale), also called ginger, imber, periwinkle or ginger root, is a plant from the ginger family (Zingiberaceae). The main shoot of the ginger plant, which lies underground, is suitable for consumption. Ginger has an aromatic smell and the taste is hot and spicy. It is automatically associated with exotic dishes with Far Eastern spices. The small root is particularly indispensable in Asian curries. Originally from the Far East, the root is now found all over the world. Ginger has played a major role in Chinese medicine for thousands of years.
